Protecting our environment

Updated: Dec 20, 2017

SWM are keen to use their experience and expertise to support the local community, to help protect our environment and ensure that we all comply with waste management legislation. New and more stringent waste management enforcement might be seen by some as a burden but it cannot be ignored.

The recent budget detailed extra funding for the Environment Agency over the next four years to tackle waste crime and illegal operators. The £30 million they are set to receive will go some way to crack down on those operators who have, increasingly, seemingly operated with impunity and little concern over detection.

From 1 April 2018, operators of illegal waste sites will become liable for Landfill Tax, and those who continue to flout the rules will face tough civil and criminal sanctions. The Environment Agency, BMRA (British Metal Recycling Association) as well as other enforcement bodies such as British Transport Police will combine forces to tackle all kinds of waste crime. Our local farmers and tradesmen need to be just as aware of the standards expected as big corporates, no one is too big or too small to manage their waste responsibly.

SWM are the leading local independent waste management company and we are fortunate to have their state-of-the-art materials recycling facility here in South Molton.

You can dispose your recyclable materials or get paid for scrap at SWM South Molton depots - open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to midday to . Visit www.swmrecycling.co.uk for more information.
